CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

AFTER MAKING DOUBLE sure the unfinished document was backed up, I strode up and down the office wondering what I should do. My gut feeling was to drop everything, lock the place up, and rush over to the hospital to be with Martha. Although I hadn’t known her long, she and Hugo had been extremely kind to me, and I felt I should go. But I couldn’t just lock the joint up and take off without asking someone first. That didn’t seem right. I realized then that I needed Petra’s cell number. She would know what I should do. According to the clock on the computer, she should soon arrive. At least I hoped she would.

Twenty more minutes of pacing and Petra arrived. I was on her before she was even in the door.

“Petra! Hugo! You know, Martha’s husband! He’s in the hospital! He had a heart attack! Should we go over there right now?”

She raised her arms and brought them slowly down, and said, “Breathe. Just breathe. It will calm you down.” Petra took me by the shoulders and sat me down in the chair. “We can’t just leave and close the place down. It’s a business. It’s a service to the community. You might not have had too many customers since you started, but trust me, you will. And it might be today. When we close, then we can go see Martha and Hugo in the hospital.” Then she narrowed her eyes and sunk her head into her shoulders. “Could you maybe give me a ride over there with you?”

“Petra, of course! But are you sure we can’t go now?”

Petra shook her head. “No, Lorry. Someone could come in any minute and want to see the exhibits or do some genealogy.”

“Genealogy? No one ever told me about that.”

“That’s because all the books are askew right now with the move upstairs. But anyway, someone could come in any minute.” Someone turned away from our view had put his hand on the door. “See? There’s someone right now. Aren’t you glad we didn’t leave?”

The bell on the door jingled and the door opened. When I saw who it was, I said, “No, I’m not glad at all.”

It was Eddie, looking all spiffy in black slacks, white shirt with a conservative dark green tie, and patent leather shoes. He put out his arms, probably still expecting me to fall right into them. Not this time, buster. “Aren’t you glad to see me?” he asked.

“Frankly, no.” Then I got an idea, so I stood up and stood next to him. I put my hand to my head and measured where it came to on him. “Eddie? Can you help me with something?”

“Sure, Truck, anything you want.”

Suddenly, being called that derogative term for all these years infuriated me. If one of those quartz rocks had been nearby, I might have brained him with it. Instead, I would take Eddie to the rock. “Come with me, Eddie!” I walked down the hallway and motioned him to follow with my finger over my shoulder.
